Ad-Hoc Committee Is Not Important, Trials Will Happen Soon: Sanjay Singh, President of WFI

The United World Wrestling (UWW) decision to restore its suspension with immediate effect was hailed by Sanjay Singh, President of the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI), who also said that the ad hoc committee led by Bhupinder Singh Bajwa “holds no significance”.

On August 23, of last year, UWW issued the suspension since the national federation was unable to organize elections on time.

“I applaud UWW for this choice. Ad-hoc committee is no longer relevant,” Singh, a known supporter of former WFI head Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, said to PTI.

“We have received formal recognition, and I am no longer suspended. Thus, getting legal counsel is not important to us,” said Singh, who was inclined to pursue the legal path due to his encounters with the ad hoc committee.

The UWW has ordered the national federation to give written assurances that Bajrang Punia, Vinesh Phogat, and Sakshi Malik—who had demonstrated in the national capital, calling for the removal of Brij Bhushan due to accusations of sexual harassment against several female wrestlers—would not face discrimination.

“I pledge to make sure that no child’s prospects are compromised. I have always argued for safeguarding each wrestler’s future. I’ll invite them to the trials we’re organizing in the near future,” Singh said.

This year’s Paris Olympics are scheduled for July, and the president of WFI promised that details on the schedule of competitions and other activities would be disclosed shortly.

“To decide on the trial date and other specifics, we shall call a meeting. The Sports Ministry will get a letter from us on this, and the ministry will ultimately decide. Singh asked every wrestler who was in the running for a spot on the national team to come to the trials.

I’m totally focused on sports and players right now. Since this is an Olympic year, our main objectives are to help our athletes and advance sports. It is urged for everyone to take part and be ready for the next trials.
