Pathum Nissanka of Sri Lanka was ruled out of the ODI series against Zimbabwe; Shevon Daniel was named the substitute

Pathum Nissanka, the opener for Sri Lanka, suffered a sudden death from what seemed to be dengue, eliminating his chances of playing in the next ODI series against Zimbabwe.

Given the seriousness of his condition, he may not be able to play in the next three-match Twenty20 International series.

Nissanka’s hospitalization for treatment was disclosed by the Sri Lanka cricket board in a press statement on Friday, raising doubts over his ability to play in the highly anticipated matches.

“Pathum Nissanka has been hospitalized due to a possible dengue illness. The player would thus be excluded from the ODI series against Zimbabwe and admitted for further management, according to a statement issued on Friday.

The 19-year-old, a gifted player with only one T20I under his credit, enters the game as Nissanka’s substitute in a calculated move. Daniel’s status in the starting XI for the first ODI on Saturday is doubtful despite his skill as an opener due to the inclusion of captain Kusal Mendis and Avishka Fernando in the batting order.

The squad is affected by the departure of Nissanka, a strong player in Sri Lanka’s 2023 ODI campaign. He was the anchor of the batting order with 1151 runs at an average of 44.26 and an incredible strike rate of 87. His four-inning average of 82.33 against Zimbabwe highlighted the gap left by his absence.

Khettarama will serve as the arena for these cricket match battles, with all three ODIs and the subsequent T20Is scheduled to take place at the storied location.
